There is speculation that the first organized beelining competition took place in Valencia, Spain around 7000 BC.  A drawing of the winning contestant finding the hive survives to this day, and is shown at right.  The hive was in a cliff face, across a Class-5 rapids.  Clearly, those beekeepers played for keeps.
